As much as rescue and rehabilitation are high on the agenda, more important is to prevent girls from being abducted in the first place. Our partner Shakti Samuha (SS) carries out regular prevention projects in the foothills, Terai (lowland) and hill districts, often supported by staff members from Asha Nepal and Shakti Milan Shamaj.
A key part of their work is to coordinate with local NGOs in these areas and support them with physical activities, expert advice, training and relevant literature, and assist them in networking with other agencies to ensure maximum support for girls at risk and their families. Asha Nepal Job Coordinator Laxmi Puri has also supported SS on many of their public activities including attending a women’s rights conference in Japan on their behalf in Autumn 2008.
Our Kathmandu team liaises regularly with other counter-trafficking NGOs and related INGOs in Nepal and participates in relevant workshops, conferences and lobbying activities. Peter Bashford has also attended a number of key conferences in Nepal over the last three years and was a keynote speaker at the Trafficking and Women’s Rights Conference in Kathmandu in 2005.
