Many rescued girls are HIV positive or have Aids, hepatitis, TB and other life-threatening ailments. Many illnesses and diseases that are curable in the West can be a death sentence in Nepal, where healthcare is often rudimentary unless external support is provided.

As with victims of trafficking, many women and children in Nepal with HIV are deserted by their families. Those returning from the brothels of India have virtually no chance of acceptance. Similar circumstances face women and children who have lost their husband or father to an HIV/Aids-related death.

Asha Nepal funds Shakti Milan Shamaj (SMS), a women’s group in Kathmandu for women infected and affected by HIV/Aids. AN and SMJ run the Shakti Halfway House, a temporary refuge for HIV-infected women who aim to re-enter regular society, and the weekly Ashraya Clinic, caring for HIV-positive women and children and their dependents. SMS is active in creating awareness of the plight of women with HIV/Aids in Nepal.
