Many rescued girls are HIV positive or have Aids, hepatitis, TB and other life-threatening ailments. Many illnesses and diseases that are curable in the West can be a death sentence in Nepal, where healthcare is often rudimentary unless external support is provided.

As with victims of trafficking, many women and children in Nepal with HIV are deserted by their families. Those returning from the brothels of India have virtually no chance of acceptance. Similar circumstances face women and children who have lost their husband or father to an HIV/Aids-related death.

Asha Nepal is committed to providing healthcare, counselling and other services for these women and their children who may also be HIV positive. However, we are in desperate need of funding to be able to continue our work, and to expand to reach the growing number of women and children who are relying on us.

Please also see our work on HIV/Healthcare, along with our 2011 healthcare projects that desperately need funding:

Shakti Halfway House (for young women infected or affected by HIV and fit and willing to find employment):  we desperately need a new donor to provide the £14,000 p.a. to run this project fully and effectively.

Ashraya Women's Centre (providing physical and mental health needs, counselling, therapeutic care, rights and HIV/Aids training, and a place to drop in when life becomes too difficult to face): we need £138,000 over the first 3 years to establish the centre. The funding will also cover a mobile clinic to support the many returnees living outside the Kathmandu Valley.
