MY WORLD, MY VIEW

A photography project with disadvantaged girls from SOS Bahini, Pokhara, Nepal

The My World, My view Exhibition was a great success, raising over £13,000! 10% royalties will go to each of the 22 girls participating with the balance of proceeds going to fund projects with SOS Bahini. The book is both a celebration of the colour and vibrancy of Nepal and an insight into life for low-caste girls in Nepal, with more than 150 photographs by the girls, along with their personal stories and views.

The girls get so excited when someone chooses one of their photos - but to be fair to them all, we divide the resulting royalties between them. Before the My World, My View project, the girls had no more than 100 rupees (about 80p) in their bank accounts. Now each has more than 4,000 rupees from photo sales in Nepal alone. To put that in context, that's half a month's salary for a professional worker in Kathmandu, and an awful lot more to an unskilled labourer in the rest of Nepal. It will make all the difference to these girls' future.  Scroll down to view the girls' photo albums below

Kamala, 15, is a confident young woman and a gifted dancer. She is lucky enough to live with her sisters and her natural mother, thanks to SOS Bahini's policy of employing widowed mothers as house mothers, in order to keep families together and to provide a family environment for girls who have none. Kamala has really captured the atmosphere and events of Dasain festival at Bindyabasini Temple, where the girls went on an early field trip, getting up close where some other girls hung back and observed from afar. Kamala wants to be a dance teacher.
