2011 NEWS:  new donors needed to provide the £14,000 p.a. to run this project!

The Shakti Halfway House was established in 2007 as a hostel for up to 60 trafficked women infected or affected by HIV and fit and willing to find employment. The need was for a safe refuge for three to six months, while women recovered psychologically and were helped back to work through our Job Coordinator.

However, the Halfway House is in jeopardy. The Elton John Aids Foundation funded the setting up and running until 2010, but their policy restricts them to just three years’ funding and no new donor has come forward. As a temporary measure, the project capacity has been combined with Shakti Milan’s Crisis Centre on a reduced scale; this project is currently funded by a Japanese organisation but, post-tsunami, they feel unable to support it beyond 2011. We desperately need a new donor to provide the
£14,000 per annum to run this project fully and effectively.

The Halfway House has helped many trafficked women back to normal life, providing counselling, medical support, vocational training and alternative therapy courses.  Please don't let this vital lifeline stop - please donate now! Thank you.
