Devi N, 10, is shy, but these photos of her former home life prompted her to open up about her past, bringing to the attention of SOS Bahini the plight of her elder sister, who is about 12 years old, and has to do the domestic work and labouring in the fields. Devi says: "I’m glad I’m at SOS Bahini. If I was living at home, I wouldn’t have a chance to study. I used to go to school but my brother stopped me and said I could go when I was older. He wanted me to work.”  Now Devi would like to be a doctor.

Devi N 1: My elder sister|This photo is incredibly potent in its utter bleakness - the more you look at this girl and her surroundings, the more you feel for her...
